VIDEO: Before & After with Kevin, OC Water Champion

          Gnorman the gnome spent one blissful February day lounging in Rancho Santa Margarita at Kevin Ells’ spectacular drought-tolerant home. He played with his dogs, frolicked in his succulent garden, and took in the sun alongside his daisies. Kevin and Gnorman also enjoyed a conversation about how he’s only been gardening for a little over a year, yet he has reaped so many benefits from embracing the drought-tolerant lifestyle.

    I live in Robinson Ranch (in Trabuco Highlands). We just joined the movement and had the turf removed in our front yard and landscaped with drought tolerant plants and mulch and installed drip irrigation. It looks great and many neighbors have commented on nice it looks.
    We are now being fined by our HOA !!!
    They tell us that we live in an “upscale neighborhood” and that the yard must be “primarily green.” Our option is to put in grass or artificial turf. Well… grass is not an option (really?). “Oh” they tell us. “you should’ve left your grass in and let it die”. REALLY? Is that what they want from an “upscale neighborhood”? I understand dead grass from not watering is the only option for people who have had lawns and aren’t ready to or able to take the step to a new, more water-wise look yet. But to be deterred, nay penalized for making our yards look nicer because we won’t replant in green grass is absurd. (We are not willing to put in artificial turf as it is not a natural option and makes the area too hot for my children’s feet.)
    I’m not sure how to handle this… we are being told that there is no discussion to be had and that we must redo our lawn to be “primarily green” with only small areas of drought tolerant plants and shrubs.

    To respond to the previous comment. Tell your HOA they are no longer able to impose that requirement on residents after the governor’s drought mandates. You should be able to fight that fine completely.
